About the creation of our smoke sauna
The smoke sauna at Jantsu Farm, near Tartu in South Estonia, is built on the shore of a pond at the edge of the forest, away from other buildings.
Located near Tartu, the smoke sauna at Jantsu Farm was built by local craftsmen from carefully selected solid aspen logs. The stove is made of bricks from the manor era. The ceiling is insulated with one and a half tons of light clay. The stove weighs over half a ton and provides a pleasant, gentle heat.
Smoke sauna traditions and heating
The smoke sauna is an ancient temple of health, where both body and soul are cleansed. Here near Tartu (South Estonia), we keep the smoke sauna tradition slow and respectful —a calm ritual, not a rush. When you step into the smoke sauna, it is as if you have entered a time machine that takes you back centuries. Time suddenly begins to move much more slowly and calmly.
The sauna is heated early in the morning, always starting with a sauna greeting. The sauna is also told who it is being heated for.
To get the stove nice and hot, you need to burn 3-4 stove loads of dry alder and aspen wood, which takes 6-8 hours. When the last load has burned, the ashes and embers are removed, the first “black” steam is thrown in, the windows and doors are closed, and the sauna is left to “bake” for 30-45 minutes.
Those entering the sauna always greet it. The sauna has its own spirit, and one communicates with it.
The sauna whisk is passed from hand to hand and the person throwing the water on the stones wishes for something good, just like saying a toast at a festive table.
It is nice to sit quietly in the front room, chat and drink sauna beer.
After throwing water on the hot stones and whisking with birch branches, you cool off in the pond – forest quiet, near Tartu, in every season. In winter, we cut hole in the ice so you can dip into cold water the traditional way.
You leave the sauna by thanking it.
The effects of a smoke sauna on the body last for several days.
Ahoy, Sauna Friends!
This summer, the Jantsu Farm SMOKE SAUNA once again welcomes all enthusiasts!
The summer solstice, or Midsummer, falls each year on June 20 or 21, when the Northern Hemisphere experiences its longest day and shortest night—and naturally, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the sauna with fresh birch whisks.
The greatest gift of celebrating the solstice is a sense of balance and inner peace. A vital part of that balance comes from our connection with nature.
The sauna is open to everyone who wants to experience an authentic Estonian smoke sauna.
The sauna day will tahe place on June 20, 2026
The sauna will be hot from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Sauna ticket: 15 euros, payable on site.

An experience that transcends the boundaries of reality. The environment is wonderful. A short walk in the snowy forest, a smoky sauna, an oasis of peace and introspection, incredibly friendly and funny hosts, a cat, a sauna guard, physical sensations and a deep sleep afterwards. Thank you!

We enjoyed a wonderful smoke sauna with rituals on a crisp winter evening, which we promised to take with us in the future. The ice hole was suitable and our group would definitely recommend Jantsu Farm! Many thanks to the wonderful family for a wonderful evening!
